My first four wheel motorized vehicle was a go-cart that my younger brother (now father of NASCAR Driver Alex Bowman) and I built when I was 12 years old.  Using a design purchased for$1.00 from Boys Life Magazine and pipe scavenged from somewhere I can’t remember, we pleaded with a welder down the street to help us
(I am sure he lost money on the deal).

Powered by a 3.5 HP Toro lawn mower engine salvaged from a mower that was headed to the scrap bin, somehow, we modified it to convert from vertical shaft to horizontal.  The things you can do when you don’t know what you don’t know.  It’s a miracle we survived during the short time we ran it through the neighborhood.

In this issue, you’ll meet Marvin Waters, the organizer of monthly Cars and Coffee events and the annual Sandhills Motoring Festival, a Concours style event held Memorial Weekend in the Village of Pinehurst.  Marvin shares his passion for motors, so you don’t want to miss it!

When you are in the area, drop by Monte Carlo Garages and check out the amazing progress.  The new road is as smooth as any I’ve driven. The foundations for the new Daytona Garages are almost ready for framing.  New LeMans units will be available for occupancy in October.  The Monte Carlo Community is growing!!

Sandhill Motoring Festival

In 2019, the Sandhills Motoring Festival sprang to life in the Village of Pinehurst, North Carolina.  It was a great success with several events-within-events such as a Bar-B-Que, Hangar Party, and a Concours smack in the middle of the Village.  Big plans were being made for an encore event in 2020, but, of course, COVID-19 was hatched, and the rest is history.  Nicely though, the organizers of the Sandhills Motoring Festival have simply moved the 2020 plans to Memorial Day Weekend for 2021 and are continuing to build on the event.

“The Festival has grown in just one year into a truly fabulous event,” said Marvin Waters, president of the Sandhills Motoring Festival.  “The Village is such a quaint, picturesque place, it’s hard to resist.  All the shops are open, but the streets are closed for people to admire the show cars and scenery.  Our sponsors are second to none, our participants are the gold standard, and we work hard to create a memorable weekend for anyone who attends.”

Friday marks the event check in and bar-b-que, a nice casual get together; Saturday kicks off the Road Rally from 8a-12p, lending a bit of time to regroup for the Hangar Party between
6p-8p.  Sunday is the Concours, with the Village hosting nearly 130 cars parked in the streets, and a Club Showcase for those wishing to enjoy the day but not have their car judged.  Awards close out the day between 5p-9p complete with cocktails and dinner.

“Each component is organized by excellent A-Type retired personalities who are absolutely professional even in retirement,” Marvin said.  “On top of that, our sponsors really make the weekend shine.  Foreign Cars Italia of Greensboro has been tremendously supportive, while Charles Schwab, Hilton Head Capital Partners, Hagerty, Pinehurst Southern Pines

Aberdeen Area Convention and Visitors Bureau,Torque Classic Cars, and, of course, the Village of Pinehurst among many others have all stepped up to help ensure that this weekend truly amazes.”  Learn more here.

A Real Pick Me Up - Advantage Lifts

Wayne Carini

When there are so many choices of lifts available, we tend to look at what the pros and industry veterans use as a gauge for quality. After all, they’ve spent a lifetime collecting and restoring cars and the last thing they would do is trust a suspect lift. Some key attributes to consider when choosing a lift company to work with are: overall product quality that is measured in strength, safety, and durability; overall value for the provided specifications, and the ability to consult with their experts.
